Stalin blocked Berlin from June 24, 1948 to May 12, 1949. It was the first major crisis of Cold War between the two superpowers, the United States and the Soviet Union. There are three main reasons why Stalin felt angered and/or threatened, and initiated the Blockade of Berlin, forcing The United States to airlift supplies into West Berlin. That operation is known as the Berlin Airlift.
- The institution of the Marshall Plan to help Europe recover from the war
- The London Conferences of winter and spring of 1948/1949
- The London program which called for a separate West Germany, and the institution of a new currency
