Krushchev’s actual Western Union telegram response to Gary Power’s father

Some additional important events in the Cold War in the 1960’s were:

Only four full months into the decade, and the Soviets make a hostile move and shoot down a United States U2 spy-plane flown by US Air Force pilot Gary Powers. To the right is the actual telegram sent by Krushchev to Powers’ father following the incident.

 

  • 1960– U2 plane shot down, JFK elected
  • 1961– failed Bay of Pigs CIA invasion, Soviet cosmonaut Gagarin first to orbit earth, Berlin border closed, Berlin Wall construction begin
  • 1962-Cuban Missile Crisis
  • 1963-Nuclear Test Ban Treaty ratified
  • 1964– Gulf of Tonkin (start of official US involvement in Vietnam), China detonates A-bomb
  • 1968– Soviets crush Czechoslovakian revolt
  • 1969– Unites States puts first man on the moon
